The Cayenne is a five-seat, mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle, manufactured by Porsche since 2002. North American sales began in 2003. The Cayenne was Porsche's first attempt to branch from sports cars to the crossover SUV, its introduction coming to the surprise (and sometimes contempt) of many Porsche loyalists. The Cayenne was the second front-engine vehicle Porsche made, and designed through a collaboration with Volkswagen. The Cayenne platform was developed and is shared with the VW Touareg. It is still in production and is considered the fastest, highest torque SUV ever built.
